The End Is Here for Microsoft Office 2010
It’s not uncommon for businesses to stick with the same version of Windows for decades. Sometimes it’s a matter of the cost of upgrades. Other times it’s because a critical legacy machine doesn’t have the necessary systems to handle the latest software. Whatever the reason, if you are still running Microsoft Office 2010 in your business, the time to update is now; before it becomes your cybersecurity’s Achilles heel.
Microsoft is ending support for Office 2010 on October 13, 2020. That means you can no longer:
- Download it from Microsoft’s website
- Call or chat for assistance
- Access help documentation
- Download updates and bug fixes, including security updates
That last bullet is critical, because it leaves your network open to viruses and malware.
Similar deadlines are coming soon for SharePoint 2010 and Project Server 2010. These programs will no longer be supported after April 13, 2021.
How Does Windows 2010 Impact My Cyber Security?
When software like MS Office is supported, it means that the creators of that software are regularly fixing potential and reported issues. Not having all your systems updated is one of the ways cyber criminals gain access to launch spyware, viruses or other malware, including ransomware attacks. All it takes is one machine to be running unsupported software to take down your whole network.
